Week 2: Morning Routine

In my post last week, I talked about my approach to New Year's resolutions and how I’ve been prioritizing my mental and physical health. One of the biggest changes I’ve made is committing to a structured morning routine, which has completely shifted how I start my day. My 5:30 AM yoga class has become a non-negotiable part of my mornings—it gets me out of bed, wakes up my body, and sets a positive tone before the rest of my day even begins. Getting up early or before the sun is up, has always been a struggle for me. I am much more of a night owl than an early riser. While waking up early isn’t always easy, especially for me, I’ve found that having a consistent morning routine makes a huge difference in my overall mindset in the morning.

Beyond yoga, I’ve started incorporating small but impactful habits into my mornings. Drinking a glass of water as soon as I wake up helps me rehydrate. I’ve also made a conscious effort to avoid immediately reaching for my phone. I tend to want to start scrolling the second I wake up, which outs me into a slump and feeling unmotivated to start my day. Instead of scrolling through social media or emails first thing in the morning, I take a few moments to set an intention for the day—whether it’s a specific goal I want to accomplish or just reminding myself to stay present and grateful. My next goal is to start journaling these goals and manifestations. I really want to start better habits for myself.

A morning routine doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Even small, intentional changes can make a significant difference in how the rest of the day unfolds. Life can be so overwhelming at this stage of our lives as most college students are busy juggling school, jobs, a social life, and other extracurriculars. Whether it’s an early workout, journaling, or simply giving yourself a few quiet moments before the world demands your attention, finding what works for you can transform mornings from a dreaded struggle into a time of productivity and self-care.
