Week 4: Live Music

In my last post, I shared my taste in music and the artists I enjoy. I've always appreciated how music can articulate things I might not be able to put into words myself. That’s also why I love seeing it performed live. Going to concerts has become a big part of my mental well-being, offering a chance to step away from everything and just focus on the experience. Even if a band’s original lineup isn’t in its prime, there’s something about the energy of a concert that makes it worth it. The atmosphere, the crowd, and hearing those songs in real time add a different layer to the experience. It's more about being there and taking it all in rather than expecting a flawless performance. The energy of the crowd, the rawness of the music, and the atmosphere make the experience what it is. A big part of the experience is not only the artist(s) but also the venue and atmosphere.

I have been to many concerts throughout my life (currently 42!) and there are many different aspects that stand out to me, but one that always catches my attention is the venue. One of the coolest spots I’ve been to is Red Rocks, which, I know, might seem like an obvious choice. But honestly, in the past two years, I have had three amazing and unique experiences in this venue. Located near Morrison, Colorado, venue is perfectly tucked between the giant red rocks that surround it. The sound quality and overall vibe are unmatched. The sound quality and overall atmosphere is unmatched. This amphitheater provides an environment that cannot be duplicated.

Another interesting venue I've been to recently is the House of Blues in Chicago. It’s a completely different vibe compared to places like Red Rocks, but that’s what makes it so unique. The space is cozy and intimate, with a real sense of character. It’s one of those venues where you can almost feel the history in the walls, and every performance there feels personal. For smaller, acts, I feel it is one of the best venues in the Chicago area.

One venue I've wanted to experience is the Gorge in Washington. With its location on a cliff overlooking the Columbia River, the views alone seem like they’d make it worth the trip. Seeing a show there with the natural landscape in the background must add something special to the experience. The open-air setting and reputation for great acoustics make it a spot I’ve been hoping to experience for myself someday.

Live music, whether at Red Rocks or the House of Blues, lets me fully immerse myself in the experience, tuning out everything else for a while. Being surrounded by the energy of the crowd and the power of the music helps me feel more connected and present. It’s a moment to focus on something I truly enjoy, and that sense of immersion does a lot for my overall well-being.

  1. So many concerts! I'm twice your age and have been to maybe 10. If we aren't counting symphonies and high school band, that is!
